On my way to Kona! The easy way!

Ok, this is the easy, peasy way but as it is in the rules and I was lucky enough to win a spot, I will grab the chance to do Kona with two hands. The "pure" way is to obtain a slot by qualifying at an official IM such as IM Japan. But even this is open to chance. Sickness, a kick in the face during the swim, a flat tyre or worse during the bike and blisters or cramps etc during the run are just a few of the factors that may decide if a slot is won in a race or not. Another is that some "uber-triathletes" may target this race to qualify and fly in from any where in the world and take all the slots. But I will still aim at sub 11 hours and a top 5 placing at IMJ and earn my slot anyway.

And I have decided to give it my best shot and "try hard" at Kona, as I may not get another chance. I still can't believe that I am going to this tough and hallowed course and will compete in this storied and famous race along side World Champs. Kona is the Wimbledon of triathlon and most triathlete's goal. Why? Watch this clip and find out.

2007 Ironman Lottery Winners

On October 13, 2007, these lucky 200 athletes will have their lives changed forever...

Thanks to the vision of Ironman founder John Collins, who insisted that a system be maintained to allow the "common man" a chance to compete in this great race, 200 far-from-common age-groupers will join the rest of the 1,800 strong in Kailua Bay on October 13, 2007 for the Ford Ironman World Championship.

64412 MIERS KEREN AUS

There are only 50 International slots out of the 200, so I was very, very lucky to have a chance at being being a "common man" an Kona.

Awesome maet. Are you going to do the old lift the bike way up above your head thing? It looks just so, so, ... Ironman!

But honestly, the video gave me goosebumps. Made me even start to think, hmmm...I wonder ...

You don't have to apologize about going to Kona. Your going there and that's what matter. Now go out and give your all at IM Japan.

I was talking to Jay the other day about a mini tri I saw that will be going on when I'm in the U.S. this summer. 50 meter swim, 50 meters! I can do that. But that's how it all starts isn't it? And I'm not sure this is a road I want to travel.

Thanks chaps!
I am really not beating myself up about getting a slot in this way, I am stoked to be going.

AZ- triathlon is fun, but it is a big commitment in time, especially with IMs. But I like that it is three sports so there is a lot of varied training. I am not one who can log 120km of running a week like some do. Try it and you may be hooked as well!

Paul, I will let you know about some upcoming rides, but be warned that we are not up to your pace. But you would give us something to chase!

"Common Man"?!

Looking at your recent run times amidst your 20+ hour training weeks, I don't buy into this "giving the common man a chance" stuff in your case.

I am more of the common man.
